Our beds are handmade
by us, one at a time, to your specifications. |
|
 |
Their beds are mass produced. |
 |
When you order from us,
you will talk to The Stubborn Norwegian himself...the very person
who is going to build your bed. |
|
 |
When you order from them,
you won't know who built your bed and neither will they. |
 |
Our beds are made of 100%
solid wood, available in solid douglas fir or solid pine. |
|
 |
Their beds are often made
of veneered products such as plywood or even particle board/MDF
(don't get us started on the metal beds). |
 |
ALL of our models are built
for children AND adults. |
|
 |
Their beds are typically
too flimsy for average adults. |
 |
We have many customization
options for size, clearance, colors and finishes. |
|
 |
Their beds arrive from the
manufacturer already packaged in a box. |
 |
Our design utilizes triangular
supports and high-strength hardware to create a wobble-free
product for life. |
|
 |
Their beds are held together
by screws (for a while anyway). |

THE PROBLEM...
|
|
THE SOLUTION:
|
|
With most manufactured Bunk Beds and Loft Beds is that they are
held together with lag screws or barrel bolts. Not coincidentally,
a common complaint about those beds is that they wobble...a
lot.

The stresses applied to the bed over time (kids will be kids) begin
to pull out the screws and strip out the bolts, and the bed soon
becomes wobbly and unsafe, and needs replacement.

All of our products
are handmade in the USA
in Seattle, Washington.
All of our raw materials are
locally obtained. What can
we say, we're stubborn
about solid wood!
|
|
First, we start by using 1/4" carriage bolts to mount the
bed rails to the ends of the Bunk Bed or Loft Bed once these
are in place, they're going to stay that way.
Next, we securely anchor each corner of the bed using the strength
of the triangle. What are we babbling about? Read on...
A Bunk Bed or Loft Bed is like a large empty box...if you press
hard on one corner, it will collapse. UNLESS...
|
The corners are frozen in place with triangular shaped trestles,
like bridges have.
|
 |
Take a look under a bridge sometime, and you will see triangular
shaped trestles supporting all the weight and giving the bridge
its rigidity.

triangular and
diagonal braces

of one of our
Loft Beds.
|
 |
Not only do our beds use triangular supports at the corners,
but also across each end as well.
Notice how the diagonal bracing on the end of this Loft Bed
looks just like some bridges you've seen.
The same support is used on our Bunk Beds, as well.
|
This method results in a very rigid and durable design. Companies
that manufacture beds don't use this method because it means
extra material and labor on an assembly line somewhere.
We hand build each Loft Bed and Bunk Bed, and we
think this is the only way to go. This is how we are able to offer
a bed that lasts a lifetime!

Our Wood
|
We build our Loft Beds and Bunk Beds from Pacific Northwest
Douglas Fir. We think this uniquely beautiful wood is the
perfect match for our simple, elegant design. And, as far as we
know, we are the only ones building Loft Beds and Bunk Beds in
this wood. We're oddballs, and proud of it!
Why Douglas Fir? Well...take a look. It speaks for itself:

Besides its beauty, Douglas Fir has these advantages:
- It is among the strongest and hardest of the softwood species.
- Douglas Fir is unique among all softwood species in that it
is naturally dimensionally stable...this means that it is much
less likely to warp or crack over time than other woods.
- Douglas Fir has tremendous elasticity compared to other softwood
species, which means it bends much less under a heavy load,
and has a higher breaking resistance.
For more information about Douglas Fir and its properties, take
a look at the Western
Wood Product Association's website.
What about Pine?
We are also happy to offer any model Bunk Bed or Loft Bed in
Pine for the folks who prefer it. You may be trying to match other
pieces of furniture you already have in Pine. Also, Pine is an
excellent choice if you want your Loft Bed or Bunk Bed stained
a color, as Pine takes a stain finish very nicely.

Finishes
|
 |
Clear Lacquer our Best Option
Our standard finish consists of a clear lacquer, which we apply
by spraying. We think this is the ideal solution for Douglas
Fir, because it completely seals and protects the wood with
a hard, clear, smooth finish, and still allows the natural beauty
of the wood to show through. It is also very easy to maintain
for the customer; simply wipe it down with a damp rag when necessary.
Stain
We offer a stained finish (which is applied before the clear
lacquer topcoat) for an additional charge. We use Minwax
Wood Stain, which is available in the following colors:
 |
 |
These colors look so great on the wood, we usually feel compelled
to spray a bunch on our clothes, too. If you ever see somebody
walking down the street in a pair of Colonial Maple Levi's with
matching Golden Oak t-shirt, that one of us. You can learn more
about these products at Minwax.com.
Unfinished
All of our Loft Bed and Bunk Bed models are available Unfinished,
for those folks who want to try their hand at wood finishing
and say they did it themselves! Unfinished products are offered
at a reduced price. Naturally, we're always glad to help first-timers
through the finishing process - hey, we been there!
